ABACUS AND MENTAL MATHS

What is abacus ?

An abacus is a manual calculation tool that consists of beads or disks that can be moved up an down on a series of sticks or string within a wooden frame.

The abacus itself does not calculate, its simply a device for helping humans to calculate by remembering what has been counted.The modern Chinese abacus, which is still widely used in China and other countries, dates from about 1200 A.D.

WHAT IS MENTAL CALCULATION ?

Mental calculation comprises of arithmetic calculation using only the human brain, with no help form calculators, computers, or pen and paper. No computing tools like calculator or computer can be used.

HOW DOES UC MAS HELP WITH MENTAL MATHS ?

UC MAS boosts brain power and teaches child to see in pictures. It uses double hand fingering on abacus which develops both the sides of the brain.

Most brain development in children occurs primary before the age of 14, with much of that development taking place in the first several years of life. Children retain significant "neuroplasticity" meaning brain adaptability that allow growth and inter connection of brain neurons.

The UCMAS Program is designed to develop the integrated and motoring functions from both sides of the brain. When children manipulate the beads of abacus, communication between the hands and the brain stimulate the brain's right and left hemispheres. The right hemisphere- abstract side - creates an image memory of the beads on the abacus while the left hemisphere - logical  side - applies the requisite rules to perform the calculation.

Because the right hemisphere of the brain is much faster than the left, when the students exercise the right side through 'visualisation', this results in strengthening  the right-brain capabilities such as :

• Photographic memory
• Perform complex calculations
• Conversion of images to words, number and symbols and the reverse
• Ability to process information on an intuitive level

When both sides of the brain are activated through the UCMAS training, students can achieve calculations speeds previously only attainable by maths geniuses.

Better focus and concentration coupled with enhanced creativity and memory helps students swiftly determine the component part of a problem and devise a viable solution- and not just Maths- but in navigating effectively through every day life.
